James proudly served in the United States Army during World War II as a field wire chief in Germany and Japan. He received the American Theatre Service Medal with one Bronze Star, Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and a WWII Victory Medal. He was a past commander for the VFW Post 6814 in Laurinburg.
James was a lifelong resident of East Laurinburg, having retired from Waverly Mills after 45 years. He was an avid softball player in the '60s, earning the nickname "Tuffy" for his tenacity and love for the game. He served his community as an alderman and delivered with Meals on Wheels for many years.
