Harold Abrams, M.D., age 81, of Trumbull, Connecticut, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving wife Carol and close friend and caretaker Crystal, after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was born in Dallas, Texas and raised in the Bronx, New York. He attended Stuyvesant High School, Columbia College and SUNY Downstate Medical School, graduating with a MD in 1957. He completed a general surgical residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas in 1962. He served in the Army Medical Corps for 11 years, at Fort Benning Georgia, Munich Germany and Fort Dix New Jersey. He was engaged in the private practice of General Surgery in Bridgeport, Connecticut at Park City and Bridgeport Hospitals from 1968 until his retirement in 2003. He was in partnership with Dr. Ed Kamens for 18 years, solo practice and then partnership with Drs. Duerr, Wasson and Pleban. From 2004 to 2012, he was a surveyor for the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, surveying over 170 hospital cancer programs throughout the United States. He was well-regarded in the Bridgeport medical community and received the honor of Physician of the Year in 2007 by the Greater Bridgeport Medical Association. Dr. Abrams is survived by his wife of 34 years, Carol Johnston Abrams of Trumbull, their daughter and son-in-law, Christen Rae and Brenton Chamberland, and his beloved granddaughter, Aria Vivian, currently of Hamden. He was predeceased by his former wife Helene Glass Richmond. He is also survived by their daughter and son-in-law Sharon Julie and Christopher Meinck, and his loved granddaughter Sasha Marie of Norwalk; and their eldest daughter Lorrie Regina, and his treasured granddaughters, Rebecca Ann and Heather Lynn, and her husband Larry Middleton. Also surviving Dr. Abrams are his sister and brother-in-law, Myra and Ira Goodman; brother and sister-in-law, Lewis and Milly Abrams; his brother, Calman Abrams, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Kathi and Al Gomes and many nephews and nieces. The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the many physicians who cared for and were special friends of Dr. Abrams, which includes Drs. Kunkes, Primary Care and Cardiologist; Viner, Urologist; Malefatto, Oncologist; Chao, VA Medical Oncology; and Hughes, Urologic Oncology at Dana Faber Institute in Boston. Dr. Abrams had an endless passion for traveling with his wife, most recently and fondly to Alaska along with his brother Cal and friend Ruth as well as to the Mediterranean with Michael and Joanne Wynne, fishing trips with his brothers and gardening. His zest for life and contagious sense of humor earned him many friends and even a cameo in the Park City Hospital staff talent show. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 11am, friends may call from 10am to the time of service, at The Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home on 88 Beach Road in Fairfield, CT.
