British Admiral and Explorer. The son of a doctor, he entered the British Royal Navy as a Naval Cadet in June 1859. In 1872 he participated in the 4-year scientific expedition aboard the broadside ironclad HMS Challenger that made many discoveries to lay the foundation of oceanography. In 1875 he transferred to the sloop HMA Alert to take part in the British Arctic Expedition, which was sent by the British Admiralty to attempt to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound. He was promoted to the rank of rear admiral in December 1898 and became superintendent of the Portsmouth Naval Dockyard. In 1902 he was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) by British King Edward VII and the following year, he was promoted to the rank of vice-admiral and finally to the rank of admiral in March 1907. He retired the following year and resided in Great Bealings, Suffolk, England, where he died at the age of 85.
