EATON - Preble County Sheriff Thomas Hayes died early Wednesday after undergoing emergency surgery at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
Sheriff Hayes, in office since 1993, was 49. He was described as "a good man" by Chief Deputy Michael Simpson, 36, appointed by Preble County commissioners to be the interim sheriff.
The father of four, Sheriff Hayes planned to seek a fourth four- year term in November 2004. Simpson said he planned to run for sheriff after Sheriff Hayes retired.
"But this was not part of my goal," he said.
