Joan C. Hogan Joan C. Hogan, 74, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 5, 2007, as a result of Alzheimer's disease. She was born August 16, 1932, at Shreveport, La., the only child of Jerome A. and Dorothy (Shisler) Cararas.

She was a graduate of Byrd High School in Shreveport, and a member of the National Honor Society. She was also an honor student at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas, where she graduated with an English major and music minor. While at SMU, she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and the Episcopal student campus ministry. She married Henry J. Meyer in 1954, where both resided in Dallas until moving to Council Bluffs, where Mr. Meyer became an associate at the Meyer Funeral Home. To this union two children were born: Susan and Russell. Henry passed away on March 12, 1970. Joan married Dr. Richard D. Hogan, Senior Minister at First Christian Church, Council Bluffs, on June 12, 1992. She was a former Sunday school teacher at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. After becoming a member of First Christian Church, she became active in the Missions Ministry, the Women's Council Circle Six, and enjoyed traveling with her husband on speaking engagements. She was a member of the Council Bluffs Service League and elected to their board, the Council Bluffs P.E.O. Chapter G2, and the Bella Vista, Ark., P.E.O. Chapter BL. She also enjoyed classical music, Gospel music, and gardening. The couple moved to Bella Vista, in March 1993, after Dr. Hogan closed his 31-year ministry at the Council Bluffs First Christian. He was called to the Bella Vista Christian Church, and the couple served this congregation for 10 ½ years. After semi-retirement, the couple has been serving interim ministries in Arkansas and Missouri, presently in the second year of interimship with First Christian Church, Gentry, Ark. At BVCC, "Joanie" was on the Moral Concerns Ministry, participated in Dorcas Guild, and the Wednesday night Bible study. Long after her Alzheimer caused severe memory loss and recognition, she loved to worship on Sunday morning and participate in the singing of hymns and communion. Her love for her husband and family was only exceeded by her love for the Lord Jesus Christ. Her personal Bible, filled with notes and references, is mute witness to the depth and excitement of her faith. Her name means, "Gift Of God," as indeed she was.

She is survived by her husband; son, Russell Meyer and Jackie, of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Susan Meyer- Jones, of Council Bluffs; step- children, David Hogan and Nancy, of Oak Park, Ill.; Rev. Dan Hogan and Kathy, of Linn, Mo.; Diane Ratekin, of Omaha, Neb.; and Deborah Hunter and Gail, of Council Bluffs. There are also 14 grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 9, 2007, at Bella Vista Christian Church, with Pastors Dan R. Hogan, Ron Carter and Andrew Rader. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2007, at the Bella Vista Funeral Home Chapel, 2258 Forest Hills Blvd., Bella Vista, Arkansas. A second service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 12, 2007, at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Wood- ring Funeral Home, Council Bluffs, with Pastors Robert O. Boseck, Lowell Burkum, and Duane King, of Deaf Missions. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, 2007, at Cutler- O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Walnut Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Bella Vista, AR, Christian Church; First Christian Church, Council Bluffs, or Deaf Missions, Council Bluffs.
