Born in New Zion, South Carolina, he was a son of the late William Edgar Baker, Sr. and Ava Vermelle McIntosh Baker. He was a graduate of the Gable High School Class of 1951. On September 17, 1955, he married the love of his life: Mary Gertrude DuRant Baker, at the New Harmony Presbyterian Church in Alcolu, South Carolina, and from there on, spent 56 wonderful years with her. Not only was he known for being a farmer, hunter, fisher, and a dirt track racing driver throughout the community, but he was also a member of the Bullhead Hunting Club, the Omar Shriner's, and the New Zion United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister: Margaret (Fred) Abel of Jupiter, Florida; three children: Edgar (Gwyn) Baker, III of New Zion, South Carolina, Diane (Bernie) Uber of Conway, South Carolina, and Mary Ava Baker of New Zion, South Carolina; two step-grandchildren: Mary Kathryn (Wade) Jordan of New Zion, South Carolina, and Allison (Benny) Knowlton of New Zion, South Carolina; five grandchildren: Trudy Baker of New Zion, South Carolina, Alyssa Uber of Conway, South Carolina, Mary Jude Lambert of New Zion, South Carolina, Steven Lambert of New Zion, South Carolina, and Amos Uber of Conway, South Carolina; and two step-great-grandchildren: Heath Jordan of New Zion, South Carolina, and Benjamin Knowlton, Jr. of New Zion, South Carolina.
