Son of Wilhelm "William" Gust* and Henrietta Loeschman, husband of Matilda Pisbanske or Pizonski, whom he married on January 19, 1889 in Cook County, Illinois, and father of Emma (married Funk), Louise Marie (married Prast) and Maetie "Martha" Gust (married Wesley.

On May 14, 1872, Hermann Gust, aged 6, arrived in the port of New York, NY, aboard the ship Magdalena which sailed from Bremen, Germany, with his parents, Wilhelm Gust, aged 27, a workman, and Henriette Gust, aged 32, and siblings, Paul Gust, aged 2 years, 6 months, and Wilhelm Gust, aged 2 months.

In 1880, Herman Gust, aged 15, was living at Fourteeth Place, Chicago, Illinois, in the home of his parents, John Gust, aged 43, and Henrietta Gust, aged 41, with siblings, Paul Gust, aged 12, Lina Gust, aged 6, Frank Gust, aged 5, John Gust, aged 3, and Charles Gust, aged 1. Herman was shown to be working in a cigar store.

In 1900, Herman Gust, aged 35, was living at 1127 West 21st Place, Chicago, Illinois, with his wife, Mathilda Gust, aged 33, and children, Emma Gust, aged 11, Louise Gust, aged 9, and Meta Gust, aged 7. Herman was shown to be a day laborer.

Herman was shown to be a signal foreman for the steam railway. Also in 1940, Ralph Prast could also be found living in the home of his parents in Michigan City, LaPorte, Indiana.
