Dr. Alvin C. Bertucci, 90, was called to rest on Tuesday, May 27, 2014.
He was born September 5, 1923 in New Orleans.
His parents, Dr. Emile A. Bertucci Sr. and Clare F. Bertucci; and his two brothers, Dr. Emile A. Bertucci Jr. and Gerald L. Bertucci, preceded him in death.
Al is survived by the love of his life and wife of nearly 69 years, June Zatarain Bertucci; and four children (and spouses,) Duane A. Bertucci, June B. Logan (King), Jill B. Perez (Cop) and Joy B. Wade (Jim); and eight grandchildren (and spouses), Rushell B. Chabaud (Steve), G. King Logan III, Virginia L. Smith (Will), Ellen R. Logan, Charles H. Perez, Michael L. Perez (D'Ann - fiancée), Elizabeth W. Green (Anderson) and Caroline B. Wade; and three great-grandchildren, Julia L. Chabaud, Bennett W. Smith and Eleanor Z. Smith.
Al graduated from Jesuit High School in 1939 where he played the saxophone in the marching band and the flute in the symphony orchestra. His early love of nature and ornithology led to a degree in taxidermy from the Northwestern School of Taxidermy. His signature mount was a Barred owl under attack by five fighting Blue Jays (Jesuit mascot), which hung on the wall outside the Jesuit school library for many years.
After graduating from Soule Business College, Al received pre-dental training at LSU where he served as president of Theta Kappa Phi fraternity and board member of the inter-fraternity council. A natural athlete, he was also the collegiate handball champion. After LSU, Al attended Loyola Dental School where he received his DDS degree in 1947. In 1947-48, he served an Oral Surgery internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, after which he was called to active duty in the Navy, serving aboard the destroyer tender, the USS Frontier, as ship's dental officer during the Korean War.
After his discharge at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, FL, Al open his dental practice in Poplarville, MS, for 4-1/2 years before moving back home to open his dental clinic in Metairie, where he practiced for the next 30 years. He was a member of the New Orleans, Louisiana and American dental associations. Al was a member of the Virgilians Carnival Organization and reined as king in 1957. He was also a member of the 25 Club and the Southern Yacht Club.
Al will long be remembered as one of the region's finest amateur golfers. His major golfing accomplishments included three lifetime holes-in-one, winning the New Orleans Italian Open in its last year of medal play, winning the Suburban Golf Club Championship six times and winning the Tri-States (TX-LA-MS) Dental Golf Tourney.
His other hobbies included fishing and vegetable growing. A gifted "showman" and humorist, Al will also be long remembered for his unique "roasts and toasts" at innumerable occasions for family and friends, and for creating and designing unique and clever personalized birthday and anniversary cards for everyone he loved. Al was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church and for 30 years was an annual participant at Manresa House of Retreats.
