Great Italian Violin Maker

Nicola Amati was born on December 3, 1596 in Cremona , Italy. He was the son of Girolamo Amati and Madalena Lattazini. He was the grandson of Andrea Amati, the founder of the Amati family of violin makers.

Nicola Amati was the best craftsman in the family. He made a more elegant model than prior Amatis, with curved top and bottom and made with very fine grain wood. The resonance openings were graceful, the volute size exquisite and the varnish transparent. The violin sound was soft and sweet. As a rule, he used a small pattern, although he built several large violins that are now called "Grand Amatis" and are highly valued. He also built several cellos and violas of considerable beauty. The great Italian violin makers Antonio Stradivarius and Andrea Guarneri were his disciples.

Nicola Amati was married May 23, 1645, to Lucrezia Pagliari, he being then forty-nine years old and she thirteen years younger. They had nine children. Only one, Girolamo, namesake of his grandfather, followed Nicola as a maker of violins. Nicola died in Cremona , Italy, on April 12, 1684, at the age of 87 years.
