Rachael Sarah Carpenter was born 1785 in Hart Co., Kentucky, the daughter of John Carpenter of Kentucky. She married John Sowell about 1808 in Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was born 1780 in Rutherford Co., NC, and died May 10, 1838 in Gonzales Co., Texas. Rachel was the fifth white woman to cross the San Marcos River in Texas. John Sowell was one of “The Old Eighteen” who held off Mexican soldiers and refused to give up their cannon in Gonzales September 1835. After the fall of the Alamo John and Rachael were in the Run and Escape movement. Lead by Andrew Jackson Sowell, they boarded a ship at Matagorda Bay. Later Santa Ana was placed on the same ship and Rachael refused to be seated at the same dinner table with him.
After John Sowell died in 1838, she married George Washington Nichols on July 21, 1840 in Gonzales, Texas. They divorced in March 1848. Rachael Sarah Carpenter Sowell died after 1860 in Seguin, Guadalupe Co., Texas. In the 1850 and 1860 U.S. census for Guadalupe, Texas, Rachael was living with her son Andrew Jackson Sowell and his family at age 65 and 75 respectively. She is buried in the old Andrew Jackson Sowell Family plot at San Geronimo Cemetery near her children Asa and John Newton Sowell, Jr.
