William J. Cardwell, age about 40, of Fayetteville, died Saturday, November 18, 1882.

He was born in 1842 in Bedford County, Tennessee, the fifth of the eight children of John B. and Elizabeth (Taylor) Cardwell.

He came to the Fayetteville area with a large family group in the early 1840's.

In the U.S., Union Soldiers Compiled Service Records, he is listed as:
William J. Cardwell, age 22, Enlistment Date 1865, Military Unit, First Cavalry.

He and Martha Elizabeth Edmondson were married December 29, 1867 in Washington County, Arkansas.

He is buried in Combs Chapel Cemetery, two miles south east of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Additional Information:
This community cemetery, deeded in the mid 1800's by the Sutton family, was not known as the Combs cemetery until after the 1899 death of Nathan Combs.

William's parents were married in 1832 in Bedford County, Tennessee, and in the 1840 census they were still in Bedford County.

His grandparents, Richard E. & Margaret Cardwell with at least five of their adult children and their families came to the Fayetteville area in the early 1840's.

The family was listed in the 1850 census at Prairie Township (now Fayetteville), as Elizabeth (36), Joseph (16). Louiza (14), Margaret (12), Joanna (10), William (8), Calbert (6).

His father was not listed in the 1850 census, but he may have only recently died, as a daughter, age 5, was listed in the 1860 census.

The 1860 census near Maysville, listed Elizabeth (47), Louiza (27), Joanna (18), John (16), Colvil (15), Sarah Jane (7), & Julia (5).

The 1870 census lists Elizabeth in Fayetteville, as E. Cardwell (59), living in the home of her daughter, Louiza Marr.

The 1880 census lists his mother, a widow, living at Fayetteville.

In the 1870 & 1880 Census, W.J. & his wife, Martha E. were listed in Fayetteville.

Gravesite Details

This Memorial was originally based on a 1954 & 1981 reading of this cemetery. In 1981 the name was listed between the names of Sybil Gibson and Robert C. Wilks. I have located his stone (Dec. 2017) & have posted a picture.
