Smith Stewart Hart was the oldest of twelve children born to pro wrestler Stewart Edward "Stu" Hart and his wife Helen Louise Smith.

He was trained in the Hart Dungeon by his father and wrestled for Stu's Stampede Wrestling promotion from 1973 until 1984, when the WWF bought Stampede Wrestling. Smith also wrestled in the Japan-based International Wrestling Enterprise and the National Wrestling Alliance.

After his retirement from in-ring competition in 1991, Smith made a few appearances in the WWF, including the 1994 SummerSlam event during the feud between his brothers Bret and Owen, and again at WrestleMania 26 to aid Bret in his win over Vince McMahon.

In 2011, Smith revived Stampede Wrestling and was their promoter/booker. He also opened Hart Brothers Wrestling School in Cambridge, Ontario, training several wrestlers.
