In December of 1924, as the world anticipated celebrating the birth of Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, Esau and Luella Cunningham awaited the arrival of their 5th child. On December 4th, in the tranquil settlement of Colonel Hill, Crooked Island, their pre Christmas gift was wrapped as a beautiful baby girl entered this world.

Alra was as unique as her name. She had a personality was unmatched. "Goddie Alra, Auntie Alra, Cousin, Ca' Alra" as she was affectionately called, was hospitable beyond measure. She was loving, caring and kind. She never hesitated to share whatever she had. Alra certainly had a heart of gold.

Cousin Alra was such an admirable lady, with magnetic qualities. It did not matter whether you were a stranger or a native, you could not help but be drawn to her. She just knew how to make people feel special and welcomed.

Above all, Alra was a child of the King. From an early age, she gave her life to working in the vineyard of Lord. "A missionary is what she wanted to be". She stood firm on the solid rock and never looked back. She loved confirming her faith and trust in The Lord every chance she got. She knew that only Jesus could bring changes to any situation.

Alra attended the Colonel Hill All Age School where she was a top student. She knew the value of education and when the opportunity came for her to go to nursing school, she became excited only to be told by her Mom that she was needed more at home.

Life in Crooked Island was not easy at all. As a young woman her work never seemed to end. She had to assist her mother in making ends meet. Her job was multi-faceted but through it all she continued to trust in The Lord.

It was the ever cool, quite charming Edward Chisholm who had just returned home from the "contract", who stole her heart. They eventually married on April 19th, 1950. This marriage change her life style in so many ways, as she now had a shoulder to lean on. They were so in love and it was evident all those around. Edward was a provider; He did so adequately for the family and treated her as royalty. Alra never once allowed her new found prosperity and joy to unravel her. She continued to toil in the vineyard of her Lord.

Edward and Alra's Union was blessed with one boy and one girl. Hermis and Delma. Together they also raised Hermis' son Jamal and her sister, Ella's younger son. Their home was always open to many.

Mommy Alra taught her children that the fear of The Lord is the beginning of wisdom. She also stressed the importance of manners and respect. She was an avid disciplinarian who believed that education was important in today's world and so she made sure that her children took advantage of getting a good education.

Her love of God and Church was evident as she never missed a service if she was able to attend. Alra attended St. John's Baptist Church in Colonel Hill All of her life. She served as Sunday School teacher, choir and prayer band member. She was also a member of the A.C.L. Society and the Red Cross.

As Mommy Alra grew in age, her earthly tabernacle began to fail her. She would be sick one day and rallied up the next. She always spoke about leaving this old world and going home. She was always ready to go. On Saturday, October 20th, 2012 at about 4:15 PM as her daughter Delma wiped her face and forehead; she simply rested her head on Jesus' breast...She Went to Be With Her Lord...She Fought a Great Fight and Has Obtained Her Prize...May Her Soul Rest In Eternal Peace...

Alra has left an endearing legacy and a host of relatives and friends. They are too many to name but noteworthy mentions are: Her only son and daughter, Hermis Chisholm and Delma Chisholm.
