Dale was born on a cold winter day in his grandmother's old farmstead, located 9 miles east of Stillwater. The country doctor noticed the small right club foot and recommended his parents get medical treatment right away. His parents, Russell and Pauline Putnam, had little money or resources. It was Depression time. Jobs, money and transportation were scarce. Nonetheless during the next 13 years, they placed him in Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City and in Shriner's Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Both places worked to correct the defect and finally normal walking was possible.Dale graduated from Stroud High School in 1951. A Pell Grant allowed Dale to attend Oklahoma State University. He graduated in 1955 with a business degree and a commission from the United States Air Force. Dale was a SAC bomber pilot during the Cold War, a time when our country was preparing to defend against Russia. After leaving the military, Dale was with the Oklahoma Highway Department and then with the Federal Housing Authority. He earned his RM certification through the Appraisal Institute of America. Dale met Jolene Ingram through helping her son Scott in Boy Scouts and married her in 1982. Together they joined Church of the Servant United Methodist Church and they were involved in church and community service. Dale said for him the "good life" means being obedient to the Lord and when that happens the Lord does provide generously, although not as the world might view it. Dale was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and entered Integris Hospice in September 2015. Melissa Marr RN has been an invaluable resource as his hospice nurse to help Dale have the best quality of life. Amy Van Zandt is the gentle soul who helped with gardening when Dale did not have the strength and kept vigil with Jolene. David Ingram took Dale to the Myriad Gardens when Dale was strong enough to go.Dale's son, Carl Putnam, daughter-in-law Mari Ishibashi, and grandsons Elliott Kai and Linus Sho from Lynchburg, Virginia visited Dale in May. Dale deeply appreciated the visits with his brother Neal Putnam of San Diego, California. Dale has had cards and visits from our friends and church family. Christ has been with us on this journey and we are grateful for the ones He has sent to walk with us. He woke up each day smiled and said, "We have another day! What shall we do this day."The family acknowledge with gratitude doctors and medical staff of the Oklahoma Children's Hospital, and the Shriners Hospital in Portland, Oregon who repaired his foot. God has blessed us with an abundance of flowers, so in memory of Dale please do something to make our world a better place. Give of your time, talents, resources wherever the Holy Spirit is directing. Dale's life was better because of others who blessed him and he wants you to pass that on.His memorial service will be at Church of the Servant United Methodist Church, 14343 North MacArthur, OKC, 1:00 pm June 26, 2017.
