He was born on September 23, 1938, in South Charleston, to the late Roland and Nora Hartwell.
He was a member of the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles. He was a 13-year member of the United Mine Workers and a proud 41-year member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 625.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Karla Sue Hartwell; son, Doug Hartwell; and brothers, Glenn Hartwell and George Hartwell.
He is survived by his wife, three daughters, one son, a son-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.
