Alfred James De Jong, 92, of Ireton, died on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa.
   Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2017 at the Ireton Christian Reformed Church in Ireton, Iowa, with Rev. Nate Kuperus officiating. Private family graveside service with military rites at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery will be prior to the service. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 21st at the Christian Reformed Church in Ireton.
Alfred James De Jong was born March 14, 1925 to Fred and Jennie (De Jager) De Jong. He was raised near Ireton, Iowa.
   On February 6, 1950, he was married to Winnifred A. Vande Kamp in Ireton. He was drafted into the US Army and served in the Korean War, where he was wounded in combat and earned a Purple Heart. They farmed near Ireton until 1972. He then drove a propane delivery truck until he retired at age 65, but continued to work for Siouxland Propane doing a variety of jobs.
   Alfred was a lifelong member of the Ireton Christian Reformed Church.
   Survivors include his wife of 67 years; five children and their spouses, Alma (Ron) Schaap of Sioux Center, Iowa, Gloria (Lou) Kingma of Hawarden, Iowa, Lavonne (Dave) Van Oort of New Hampton, Iowa, Dennis (Lin) De Jong of Carmel, Iowa, and Karen (Greg) TeHennepe of Byron Center, Michigan; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Esther Mae Bolkema of Michigan.
   Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ted, Bernard, and Henry; three sisters, Rose Mulder, Rena De Boer, and Ann Mulder; and 2 great-grandchildren.
