Foreign Minister of Nicaragua, President of the United Nations General Assembly, Libyan Ambassador to the United Nations, Roman Catholic Priest and member of the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America (Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers). Rev. Miguel D'Escoto, M.M. was born in Hollywood, California, the son of Miguel D'Escoto and Rita Brockmann. He attended grammar school with the Christian Brothers in Nicaragua, graduating from St. Mary's College High School in Berkeley, California. He entered the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers in 1953 and was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1961 at Maryknoll, New York. After ordination, he was assigned for studies in the U.S. and earned an M.A. in Journalism from Columbia University. In 1963, he was assigned to work in Chile, where he created two of the most popular television programs in Chile in the 1960's. One of his shows, "Esta Mujer Eres Tú", was awarded the "Japan Award" by UNESCO in 1968 for being the best educational T.V. program. This was the first time the award was given to a developing country. In 1969, he was assigned to work in the United States, and he opened the still-operating publishing arm of the Maryknoll Society, Orbis Books, considered an important tool in the spread of Liberation Theology during the 1970's and 1980's. In 1979, he was released from assignment as a priest and accepted a post as Foreign Minister in the revolutionary government of Nicaragua, a post he would hold until 1990. In 2006, he was awarded the Nora Astorga Award for his example as a Peace Chancellor to Nicaragua. In 2008, he was elected as the President of the 63rd General Assembly of the United Nations for a one year term. In 2011, he was nominated as the Libyan Ambassador to the United Nations. In 2013, he was awarded the Gold Medal of Honor by the Nicaragua National Assembly, in recognition of his lifetime contributions as a diplomat and foreign minister, humanist, pacifist, ecological defense and struggle for world peace. Burial took place in Cemeterio General in Managua, Nicaragua on Friday, 09 June 2017. He was 84 years old and a Maryknoll priest for 55 years.
