"If ever there is tomorrow
when we're not together...
there is something you must
always remember. You are
braver than you believe,
stronger than you seem
and smarter than you think,
but the most important
thing is, even if we're
apart...
I'll always be with you."

From the book "WINNIE THE POOH"

Humble Beginnings...

The impending Advent Season usually permeates the air with hope, joy and peace. This was certainly the case in the fall of 1931, in the quaint settlement of Colonel Hill, Crooked Island. For at the age of 48, Luella Cunningham with her husband Esau were expecting their 8th and last child. This imminent birth would come after a few still births. The family home was anticipating the arrival of the newest addition. They welcomed Vena Ella Cunningham on Tuesday, November 10th, 1931 at around 12 Noon. Ella, as she was called by family and close friends was a bonafide daddy's girl. Their very close bond was somewhat prophetic in nature; for at the tender age of 7 she suffered her first broken heart with the death of her beloved father who passed away in 1938. His passing would prove to be very difficult for her and many times she would recall of how her heart ached for Papa.

Being the baby in the family she painfully watched as each of her siblings left the family homestead for the big city of Nassau. When it came her turn, it was met with much trepidation. However, in time Mama, Alra and "Bulla Ed" sent her off with their blessings. Upon arriving in Nassau she lived with her eldest sister Telefar and then Zephaniah "Zephie", her eldest brother before eventually moving out on her own. Her first apartment was on Eneas St. She then moved to Lily of the Valley Corner and finally Fritz Lane where she would live until personal matters led her to leave Nassau. She and her younger son left Nassau for Freeport, Grand Bahama in 1975. There she remained until she moved to the U.S. briefly upon her retirement.

Finding Her Way…

In the winter of 1951 at the age of 20 she met her first serious love interest by the name of Neville Clarke. They dated for almost two years before tying the knot on September 28th of 1953. They decided to move to Exuma to start their life together. They welcomed their only child, Edward Clarke 3 years later in 1956. Nevertheless, by now their marriage was showing signs of crumbling that would soon result in it being dissolved. She determined that she would move back to Nassau shortly thereafter and by this time the many years of musical lessons were paying off. For she was assistant organist at Transfiguration Baptist Church. She also played the organ at Zion Baptist Church Freeport where she was a member from 1981 – 1993. She passed her musical genes onto both of her sons who showed gifting as well in several musical areas. Upon moving back to Nassau, Ella worshipped at Zion Baptist Church on East and Shirley Sts. where she sang in the Adult Sanctuary Choir. She raised her children in the fear and the admonition of the Lord. But, as we all know, children will eventually do whatever they please and unfortunately, this was the case with her older son Eddie. He was the catalyst for her relocating to Grand Bahama. His death in 2008, was yet another heartache she would suffer. She also had a baby girl who passed away at 6 months of age in 1961. Her name was Shirleymae Hannah. She spoke about her all the time. “If my daughter was alive…” “If Shirleymae was alive...” began countless stories. It was evident that she missed her still, even after so many years. One thing was certain, other than her love for the Lord, she truly loved her children.

Starting Over…..

Ella was a very hardworking young woman and held a myriad of jobs in order to put food on the table for her and her younger son. Upon arriving to Freeport, she was employed at the home of Thomas Weatherford in the capacity of a housekeeper and Nanny to his two young sons. When Mr. Weatherford acquired the franchise for KFC, she then went there to work and did so until 1983, when it was taken over by the Cooper family. Afterwards, she worked for a few other families before starting a new assignment at Lucayan Beach Hotel in the housekeeping department. She continued on there until she retired in 1996. 1997, found her moving to Wynne, Arkansas as a caregiver to two elderly sisters. She really loved this job because of the opportunity to live and work in the United States. Her younger son had the privilege of spending some time with her in September of 2002. She insisted that he meet all of the friends that she had made and it was truly a joyous occasion. She eventually moved back to Freeport, Bahamas in December of that year and somehow settled down in full retirement. With both of her sons now living in Nassau, she would make frequent trips there and often stayed for months at a time.

In 2003, she visited her sister Alra, in Crooked Island and stayed for some time. It would be her last trip there and she sure made the best of it! While her son, Enoch, was employed at a major airline, she took full advantage of that and travelled to many exotic places. Among them were: Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico City, Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas, Los Angeles and New York City, just to name a few.

Winding Down…..

Ella said goodbye to many family members over the course of her life. They are too numerous to list. However, notable mentions are: Her husband Paul in 2011, her father Esau Cunningham in 1938, her mother Luella Cunningham in 1986, her daughter, Shirleymae 1961, her son, Edward, 2008. Other family members include her siblings: Zephaniah 1984, Clarence Wilfred 1995, Marjorie Major 2005, Telefar Bain 2008, Myrtis Thompson 2008, Sylvia Moss 2010 and Alra Chisholm 2012.

During the latter 20 years or so of Ella’s life she suffered from Diabetes, Hypertension and an irregular heartbeat. Initially, medications kept them under control for a considerable amount of time. She was hospitalized several times over the last 7 years for them. However, on October 26th, 2016, she suffered a stroke that left her paralyzed on her left side and bedridden until her passing.

January 17th 2017, she was once again taken to the hospital; this time, her speech was affected and somehow she was never the same ever again. In spite of the challenges, she pushed through continually, calling upon the name of the Lord every chance she got. She did physiotherapy for a few months but she did not like it at all and often voiced her distaste for the exercises. So, it was determined from a professional opinion that she was not an ideal candidate for the physiotherapy.

On Mother’s Day, she was rather cheerful and was so grateful for the phone calls that she received from her nieces: Delma, Jenny and Sherry and she even spoke for a bit. Two days later, she began having acute respiratory issues. On the 22nd May 2017, she was taken to see the doctor who called an ambulance right away. After the initial assessments were made she was put on a respirator and anti-biotics. She held on for two more days and slipped into eternity on May 25, 2017, at 6:40am.

Left to cherish her memory are her only son: Enoch Clarke; Grand Son: Tamico Smith; Step Sons: Police Corporal 1693 Steven Moss and Police Sergeant 646 Colin McQuay. A Tribute to My Mommy...

If you could see me now you wouldn't shed a tear, Though you may not understand why I'm no longer there. Remember my spirit, that is the real me because I'm still very much alive, I've just been set free. Oh, if you could only see!

I have held our Father's face and I've touched my Savior's hand. All of Heaven's angels rejoiced as I entered the promised land. Beyond the gates of pearl I've walked on the golden streets.

I've touched the walls of jasper and dipped my foot in the crystal sea. The beauty is beyond words and nothing could compare, I've even seen our Lords mansion and someday I'll meet you there. Let Jesus be your guide because "His Word" will show you the way. So please don't cry because we will meet again someday.
