He was born on Aug. 9, 1918, in Gadsden on Lookout Mountain. He was the youngest and last surviving child of Richmond Brownlow Franklin and Mary Emily Pace Franklin. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Mable Lee Franklin; and his son, James Allen Franklin. He was a Seventh-day Adventist by belief.

James dearly loved his family and was interested in each and every member. His mind and memory were very good to the end, and he will be missed. He was greatly loved by all. He died in the hope of the resurrection, 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18. James was a retired carpenter and also worked for Kmart in Gadsden after his retirement from construction work.

James grew up in Alabama City and loved to hang out with his friends on Wall Street. He also loved his little 20 acres off Fairview Road on Lookout Mountain. He always walked everywhere he could and even went to the Gadsden Mall to walk with his walker every chance he got. He especially loved visits from his friends, Wanda Haney, Bill Jim Phillips and Henry McKelvey.

Special "thanks" to the staff of UAB Hospital for their care and compassion. Special "thanks" to his devoted caregiver and "adopted daughter" Kathy Pace McCord, also his primary physician, Dr. Clay Rowe, and his friend, Jerry Rogers of Jerry's Discount Pharmacy, Wall Street, Alabama City.
