James Irving "Butch" Joplin Sr., age 69, of Red Jacket, West Virginia, departed this life on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at the Williamson Memorial Hospital.

Born May 5, 1948 in Mingo County, W.Va.; he was the son of the late Pleasant D. and Willie O. Washington Joplin Sr.

Butch was a Veteran having served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Era and he formerly worked on the railroad and in the coal mines. He was dedicated to the youth of Mingo and Pike Counties and was a coach and mentor to countless athletes over the years. He was the founder and past president of the Red Jacket Little League, former head football coach at Phelps High School where he was a District Coach of the Year for his team having an undefeated season. He served as an assistant football coah at Matewan, Pikeville, and Pike Central High Schools as well as the first year of Mingo Central. He also served as an assistant football coach at Pikeville College. This past year, Coach Joplin assisted with the Matewan Middle School football team and Matewan Middle School girl's basketball team. Additionally, he was a member of the Tug Valley Baseball Umpire's Association. Butch was active not only in community athletics, but the community in general. He was a member of the Mt. Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church at Red Jacket and he was a member of the Williamson Crown Lodge #16 - Carl Johnson, Worshipful Master.

Survivors include his loving wife, Wanda C. Joplin of Red Jacket, his children, Kelvin A. Spotts of Georgia, Tara Wilder of Williamson, Tamika Joplin of Matewan, James I. Joplin Jr. of Red Jacket, and Deidre Y. (Darren) Jackson of Huntington, 3 brothers, Pleasant (Betty) Joplin Jr. of Indianapolis, Raymond (Robin) Joplin I of North Matewan, and Ronald (Harriet) Joplin I of Huntington, 2 sisters, Sharon Joplin of Red Jacket and Donna Seaberry of Georgia, his grandchildren, Jazzmonique, Helena, Madison, Tiara, Cherokee, Derrick, Tyshira, Caden, Keziah, Jreson, Aashana, and Keathan, 1 uncle, Irving (Lillie) Washington Sr., 2 aunts, Dorothy Washington and Phyllis Bell, and a great host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 27, 2017 at noon, from the Mt. Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church at Red Jacket with Rev. David Bell delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Mt. View Memory Gardens at Maher, W.Va. with his nephews and great-nephews serving as pallbearers. Masonic graveside rites will be presented by the Williamson Crown Lodge #16 - Carl Johnson, Worshipful Master.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Friday; May 26, 2017 from 6p.m.-8p.m., at the Mt. Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church where at 7p.m. any friend, former colleague, or former athlete can express any remarks or offer any tributes to Coach Joplin.
