Harvey was born December 17, 1925 in Heber City, Utah. He was the third son of Joseph T. Murdock "Joe Bush" and Marvel Lay Murdock. He married Carol Maughan in 1949 while attending Utah State University. They were blessed with two sons, Jeff and Brad.Harv was raised, and had his early education, in Heber City. He graduated from Wasatch High School in 1944. He was an outstanding athlete in high school and lettered in three sports; football, basketball, and baseball. He was instrumental in the 1944 basketball team winning the state championship. After graduation, Harv served in the US Navy in the South Pacific in World War II. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Harv attended Utah State University and graduated in 1950. Harv coached briefly after college, but was successful as an Investment Advisor. He was well known as a professional referee and had the opportunity to officiate at the national level. He refereed several College Bowl games and also the NCAA basketball tournaments.
Harv was active in Western History clubs and associations doing research on famous characters of the "Old West". He was named for his grandfather, Elzy Lay, who was the best friend of Butch Cassidy and ran with the wild bunch for a time. Elzy Lay later in life reformed and became a model citizen. Harv did considerable research and authored a book about his famous grandfather, Elzy Lay.
Harv was proceeded in death by his parents, his son Jeff, and four brothers Lovell, Don, Robert, and Allen. He is survived by his son, Brad, who lives in Park City, Utah.
