The Hundley family has lost its anchor. The country has lost another from "The Greatest Generation." So it is with great sadness we announce the passing of Paul Leslie Hundley Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather; native Charlestonian, WWII veteran, Carolina grad, Shipyard engineer and a leader in the team that sent US astronauts to the moon.
Mr. Hundley, our dad, died from kidney and congestive heart failure on Friday April 21, 2017 at Chatuge Regional Nursing Home in Hiawassee, GA.
An interment ceremony for immediate family will be held Saturday April 29, 2017 in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Later, a Celebration of Life from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. will be held at his home.
The family requests that instead of flowers for his funeral that memorial gifts be made to the charity that will be meaningful to the giver.He is preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Bell McDuffie Hundley (b. Harlem, GA) and James Harvey Hundley (b. Bryantown, MD); his siblings, Helen Hundley, James Forrest Hundley, Mary Caroline Hundley Weatherford Ray and Philip Hundley; two half-brothers, George Bernard Hundley and Theodore Harvey Hundley; and his first wife of 52 years, Cynthia Ruth Powers Hundley, (b. Timmonsville, SC).
He is survived by his children, Paul Leslie Hundley Jr. (Janice) of Hiawassee, GA, James Leroy Hundley (Kathleen) of Ranson, WV, Susan Hundley Still (Joe) of Huntsville, AL, and Edith Hundley Laity (George Sr.) of Arlington, TX; eight grandchildren, Joshua Hundley, Rachel Hundley, Joanna Hundley Ward, Meghan Still, Allison Hundley Kilby, George Laity Jr., Gina Laity and Caitlin Still; and five great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his second wife, Georgeanna Johnson Albers Hundley of Mount Pleasant.
Facts and dates cannot adequately sum up the man who first raised himself, then raised the four children born to him. Dad was a tireless worker, having secured his first job at 13, and stayed on the job even after retiring from a very successful federal civil service career. He was the first in his family to graduate college, and his offspring knew innately that pursuing a degree was not just an option - it was the only option after we graduated from high school. He was doubly proud that all eight of his grandchildren have college degrees, including two masters', one law degree and one PhD.
His pursuits changed through the years, camping when his family was young, gardening when first a resident of Mount Pleasant (earning his Master Gardener certification and volunteering with the beautification board.) For two decades, he faithfully attended the Murray High School monthly reunion lunches until the group came to an end through natural attrition. After that, his pleasures could mostly be found by the daily routine of coffee and the morning papers, Carolina football, a good mystery and Turner Classic Movies.
Mr. Hundley was born September 16, 1923 in an apartment over a hardware store on Charleston's historic King Street. His mother Margaret died of complications from childbirth when he was five; his father James died immediately after a heart attack when he was 15. To help support his stepmother and younger siblings, he immediately took on part time jobs, delivering groceries at one, and paint from a local paint factory at another. He was never without a job again until he retired from federal civil service in 1979. He attended Courtney Elementary School at the corner of Mary and Meeting Streets, and briefly at Charleston High School on Rutledge Avenue. Later, he chose to enroll at Murray High School where he ran track and was one of Coach Matty's Men Golden Gloves boxers. He graduated from Murray in 1941.
Though his brother James died as an airman in the European Theatre, Mr. Hundley enlisted October 29, 1942 in the Army Air Corp at Shaw Field, SC. Other assignments included Fort Jackson, Gulfport Field and Amarillo Field. When he was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal in 1946, he had been awarded the American Theatre Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, the U.S. Army Commemorative Service Medal, the WWII Victory Medal and the Cold War Medal.
With assistance from the GI Bill, Mr. Hundley attended and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1949 with a BS degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation and while on work assignment with the South Carolina Department of Transportation, he met and married his first wife, Ruth, on July 18, 1950. From 1950 until 1962, he worked for the Charleston Naval Shipyard as a naval architect, becoming certified as a Professional Engineer in the State of South Carolina in 1961.
Thinking boldly, Paul moved his family to Huntsville, AL in 1962 where he began his career with NASA as an aerospace engineer at Marshall Space Flight Center. After eight years in the Propulsion Lab, which was responsible for design of the heavy lift engines used in Saturn and Apollo, he was assigned to Wernher Von Braun's executive staff in 1970. He returned to the Propulsion Lab in 1977, and retired from NASA in 1979.
Upon retirement, he and Ruth came back to South Carolina, first to Jedberg then to Mount Pleasant where he lived for the last 28 years.
