His father, John Wentzel, fought in three wars: The Napoleonic Campaign, the Florida Indian Wars, and the American-Mexican War. Both of his parents were from Germany. Charles lived in Cumminsville, Hamilton County, Ohio. His brother, Jacob, also served in the Civil War and is buried in Spring Grove.
