During the Civil War, Canadian-born Colonel Michael William Smith served as a white officer with t Company "I" of the 66th Colored Infantry Regiment of the U. S. Army,. He was commissioned as a Colonel. The regiment was organized on March 11, 1864 and made up from the 4th Mississippi Infantry with soldiers of African descent. The regiment primarily guarded posts and served on garrison duties. They saw action at Issaqueena County in Mississippi on March 22, 1864. They were mustered out March 20, 1866. They served as an unattached regiment in the 2nd Division of the 7th Corps.
