GAINESVILLE - Jesse Doyle Ragan, 95, passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2015, following an extended illness.

J.D. was a true man of faith and a devoted husband, father, and brother. J.D. was born in Jackson County on April 5, 1920, the son of the late W.L. and Annie Ragan. As a young man he worked on the family farm. In 1942 he was drafted and served in the Army during World War II. He loyally served in the 809th Tank Destroyer Unit attached to the Ninth Army. Jesse served in France, Holland, and Germany. After Germany surrendered, Jesse was sent home to the USA to be reassigned to the South Pacific. By this time the war was over and Jesse was sent to California to finish his tour of duty. He returned to Gainesville and married Margaret Halford Ragan, on August 31, 1946. J.D. worked for the Veteran training program, sold typewriters and office equipment, and started to work for State Farm Insurance. He worked for State Farm for 32 years.
Jesse was very active in his church, Lakewood Baptist, serving as Sunday School Class for 45 plus years, chairman of deacons, deacon, training union director, brotherhood director, and many other positions. J.D. was very active in the Chattahoochee Baptist Association, working with his good friend the Reverend Bill Crowe, the association missionary. J.D. was a man of faith who loved the Lord, his church, his family, and his friends. He will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Margaret Halford Ragan; parents, W.L. and Annie Ragan; sister and brother-in-law, Ninnie and Hoyt Langford; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Fannie Belle Ragan, Rev. Harry and Ethel Ragan, Lester and Helen Ragan, and Otis and Ophelia Ragan.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Paul Brown; son and daughter-in-law, Ronny and Melissa Ragan; brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Sam and Lucy Ragan; sister-in-law, Joann Ragan, Maysville; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and Owen Peck, Dahlonega; and numerous nieces, nephews.

J.D.’s children would like to thank his wonderful friends, Rhuel and Dorothy Patterson and Reverend Gene Brooks, for their love and friendship to their father, and to Northeast Georgia Hospice for their wonderful care.

A service to honor him will be held Friday June 26, at Memorial Park Funeral Home Riverside Chapel at 11 a.m. The Revs. Gene Brooks and Jerry Gill will officiate.

The family will receive friends Thursday June 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home Riverside Chapel.
