Robert Gene “Pinky” Shelton, a lifelong Williamson resident, and widely known and respected Tug Valley pharmacist, passed away on March 25, 2017, at Baptist Health of Lexington, in Lexington, KY, following a brief illness. He was 79.
Born August 28, 1937, in Goody, KY, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Ida Beatrice Craig Shelton.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Donald Shelton, and two sisters-in-law, Helen Stepp Shelton and Betty Maynard Shelton.
Affectionately known as “Pinky”, Bob was a 1955 graduate of Williamson High School and went on to attend the University of Kentucky where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity and earned a Bachelor of Science Pharmacy Degree. He graduated from UK in 1961, and returned to Williamson where he was actively engaged in his profession for 56 years. He was employed as a clinical pharmacist with the Appalachian Regional Hospital for 41 years prior to his retirement in 2002. Although retired, Bob remained actively engaged as a pharmacist until his death. After his retirement, he continued working for several pharmacies throughout the region as a part-time and cover pharmacist. He was a licensed pharmacist in WV, KY and NC. He had been a fixture behind the counter at Hurley Drug in downtown Williamson where he had filled prescriptions on Saturday’s for more than 50 years. Bob had also worked as a consulting pharmacist for Medi Home Care Services of America since 2003.
Bob’s return to his beloved Williamson, and acceptance of employment with the Appalachian Regional Hospital after pharmacy school, proved fortuitous as he met his wife, Linda Weddington Shelton, who was also employed by the hospital at time, in a hospital elevator. Their happenstance meeting in that elevator began the journey of a lifetime. Bob and Linda married on November 22, 1961, and celebrated their 56th anniversary this past November.
While Linda says that, “Bob lived to work,” it wasn’t all work and no play. Together they raised two beautiful daughters, and they enjoyed watching them grow into adulthood and reach for their own dreams. There were many family vacations, sporting events, watching the girls cheer, graduations, college, marriages and then the grandchildren came into their lives. Bob deeply cherished his sons-in-law and enjoyed time spent with each of them. He loved to attend baseball games with his grandsons and to watch them play. He loved being with his granddaughters during family vacations and holidays. Bob deeply loved his family and was proud of everyone’s individual accomplishments.
Bob was always active and in motion. He was an avid tennis player and former golfer. He and Linda walked daily. He was a University of Kentucky sports fans and follower of the Cats. He was also known for the immaculate care he gave to his lawn and home located on Sixth Avenue. Bob would often return from a road trip, unload the car, and within thirty minutes, was mowing the lawn. He seemed to be a vessel of endless energy.
Bob was a devoted and lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Williamson where he was a member of the Methodist Men, sang in the Men’s Choir, was an usher and a former Director of Sunday School.
Bob was a member of the Kentucky Pharmacist Association and the American Pharmacist Association. He was also a member of the local Mountain Club.
Bob’s was a life well lived. God afforded to him the gifts of grace, wonderful parents and brothers, a beloved wife, daughters, and sons-in law, grandchildren, seeing and holding his first great-grandchild, a gift and endless calling for the profession he so dearly loved, and the strength and good health to enjoy it all for 79 years. Bob will be sorely missed, always in our hearts and never far from our thoughts.
