As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, SP4 Parris served our country until October 27th, 1970 in Quang Ngai, South Vietnam. He was 22 years old and was not married. It was reported that Bobby died from small arms fire. His body was recovered. Bobby was born on October 27th, 1948 in Sylva, North Carolina. We were in Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 11th Light Infantry Brigade at the same time. Telling what I remember: It was during the monsoon season and where we had setup our NDP was flooded during the night. Of course the natives houses and their graveyards were above the waterline, so that is where we went to. Since we were like sitting ducks in the middle of a pond, the higherups decided we needed to move to higher ground. The water was chest high and moving through the water was slow going. The squad that Parris was in was sent out to find a route, through the water to higher ground. It was during this patrol that the sniper fired one round, hitting Parris. I guess when this happened, he went under and drowned. After this fiasco occurred the higher ups brought in helicopters to take the rest of us out of the water. I hope this information is helpful to the Parris family. Clarence Darnell, 1333 Mayes Road, Lawrenceburg, KY 40342.
He served with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 11th Infantry Brigade, USARV.
He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
