SSG William Thomas Waddell, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Rockingham, North Carolina.

Staff Sergeant William Thomas Waddell was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, SSG Waddell served our country until May 7th, 1970 in Quang Tin, South Vietnam. He was 31 years old and was not married. It was reported that William died from artillery fire. His body was recovered. William was born on August 14th, 1938 in Rockingham, North Carolina. SSG Waddell is on panel 11W, line 128 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.

We served together at LZ Siberia, C Battery, 3/82 Arty, Supported 196TH at Hiep Duc. He was a true friend. Sgt James M Blaylock.

He is the Son of the Late Mr Watt Waddell and Mrs Bessie E Waddell, Route 1, Box 109, Richmond County, NC; Brother to Sally, Jeanette and Mary Waddell.

Williams sister said he loved to fish, go to church, make her laugh he was a joker, and he loved to cook. He was a serious person when it came to cooking.William Thomas Waddell was born August 14, 1938 in Rockingham NC. His parents: Bessie Estelle Ellerbe and Watt Waddell. He had four siblings: Sally Waddell Davis, Mary Waddell Hamilton, Jeanette Waddell Wall and Mae Waddell Patterson. William loved cooking and this was his specialty. He loved spending time with family. He did not have any children but he loved his nieces and nephews as if they were his own children. He was very loyal and dedicated to his family first as well as serving in the military.-Jeanette

He served with Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 82nd Artillery Regiment, 196th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, USARV.

He was awarded The Bronze Star Medal, Twice awarded The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Army Commendation Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal.
