Specialist Four Henry Robert Matthews was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, SP4 Matthews served our country until March 21st, 1967 in Quang Ngai, South Vietnam. He was 21 years old and was not married. It was reported that Henry died from small arms fire or grenade. His body was recovered. SP4 Matthews is on panel 17E, line 008 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for one year.
Sp4 Henry Robert Matthews of Carthage died March 21 in Vietnam of wounds received in action when he was struck by fragments of an enemy grenade, the Army has informed his mother, Mrs. Jesse Matthews of Carthage. Sp4 Matthews had been in the Army since January 1966 and in Vietnam seven months when he died. He was a 1964 graduate of Pinckney High School of Carthage and was active in the youth program of Red Hill Baptist Church before entering the service. He was a native of the Cameron area and his father was the late Jethro Matthews Senior.
Surviving Sp4 Matthews besides his mother are four sisters; Mrs. Joan Pate, Miss Bernice Matthews, Mrs. Yvonne Williams of Detroit, and Miss Mildred Matthews. One brother, Jethro Matthews Jr; Grandmothers, Mrs. Anne Morrison and Mrs. Katie Ferguson. The funeral services and burial will be at Red Hill Baptist church with full military rites.

He was the son of the late Mr Jethro Matthews Sr and Mrs Jessie G Matthews, General Delivery, Carthage, NC.
He served with Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, "Cacti Forever", 25th Infantry Division, "Tropic Lightning", USARV.
He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart Medal for his Combat Related Wounds, The National Defense Service Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation.
