Lodessia S. Handy, 95, of Martinsville, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003 at Blue Ridge Rehab Center in Martinsville, where she had lived for the past five years. Born June 9, 1908 in Patrick County, she was the daughter of the late Frank Sheppard and the late Ida Corns Sheppard. She was retired from Pannill Knitting Co. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Ralph Handy; two sons, James Odell Handy and Clyde Wayne Handy; four sisters, Eliah Bohannon, Zela Lollas, Siberian Griffin, and Edith Joyce; and five brothers, Elbert Sheppard, Tolar Sheppard, Garl Sheppard, Clifton Sheppard, and Lester Sheppard. She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Montgomery of Collinsville; a son, Harvey Handy Sr., of Mount Airy, N.C.; a sister, Inez Hill of Spencer; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Peters Creek Baptist Church, Lawsonville, N.C. with the Rev. Dud Spencer and the Rev. Phillip Woods officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at McKee-Stone Funeral Services, 109 Broad St., and at other times at the home of her daughter, Margaret Montgomery, 463 Crestwood, Collinsville.
