In 1982, divorcée Joan Donlon Peterson (her first husband was Dennis B. W. Peterson, Jr.) married Donald Harold Bent (FAG Memorial #206445181), who was also divorced. On February 17, 1986, Donald Bent reported Joan missing. On our local television news, he played the distraught husband. Eleven days later, on February 27, 1986, Joan's car was spotted parked in Menands, a short distance from their Watervliet home. The police opened the trunk and found Joan's body frozen solid. Her body was taken to Albany Medical Center for an autopsy. The results of the autopsy were death by asphyxiation caused by strangulation. Albany Medical Center is not where Joan died, but rather, where the autopsy was performed. Joan had already been dead 11 days when she was brought there.

Based on their investigation, the police concluded that after finding out that Joan was planning to file for divorce, Donald Bent strangled Joan at their Watervliet home the night of February 16, 1986, the night before he reported her missing, placed her body in the trunk of her car, and drove the car to Menands. He was thereupon arrested for Joan's murder. He was tried and in 1988 was convicted of her murder and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

Joan's murder made our local news again when the decision was made in August 2018 to parole 86-year old Donald Bent, after he had spent 30 years in prison. Everyone around here was outraged that he was paroled. Donald Bent died in Cohoes, New York, 17 months after his release.
