Sp4 Vernon Eugene Lail, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Conover, NC.

Specialist Four Vernon Eugene Lail Jr was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, SP4 Lail served our country until March 3rd, 1969 in Quang Ngai, South Vietnam. He was 20 years old and was not married. It was reported that Vernon died from multiple fragmentation wounds or mine. His body was recovered. Vernon was born on August 4th, 1948 in Conover, North Carolina. SP4 Lail is on panel 30W, line 026 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less than a year. This Vietnam Brother paid with his life on Hill 947.

He was the Son Mr and Mrs Vernon E Lail Sr, Route #1, Box 29, Conover, NC. Brother to Joe David and Jimmy Dale.

My brother has always been known as "Junior." He was trying to start his own brick laying business before he was drafted. He died on my 17th birthday. Every year it's March 2nd which is our Dad Vernon Sr.'s birthday; then March 3rd which is my birthday and the day Junior died. I wonder what he would have been like, who he would have married, what his kids would have been like. I think about how he would have been hunting and fishing buddies with Jimmy Dale and me, Joe Lail.

He served with Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, USARV.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Silver Star Medal for Gallantry in Action, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, the Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
