CPL Michael Joseph Grimm, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Carthage, North Carolina.

Corporal Michael Joseph Grimm was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, CPL Grimm served our country until July 7th, 1970 in Thua Thien, South Vietnam. He was 20 years old and was married. It was reported that Michael died from small arms fire or grenade. His body was recovered. CPL Grimm is on panel 09W, line 127 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.

My husband Freddie served with him: You are in our prayers. Freddie, we did not know that you didn't make it back until we received the book called "Ripcord", and saw your name. Fred got very upset over it. He tells me about how he placed you in the Copter and was crying and praying that God would take care of you. We are going to go to the "Ripcord" Reunion in SC. You will be remembered with honors. Freddie will never forget the times that you talked about families that you both had at home. In fact, your picture is in the book and Fred has the same picture in his book that he carries with him at all times. God Bless, and someday you and Fred wil be reunited with all of the Brotherhood of the Screaming Eagles. God Bless the USA. Carol Gilbert, 531 King Malcolm Ave, Odenton, MD 21113.

On 7 July 1970, D Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry, was conducting a move to contact against North Vietnamese Army units operating in the Thua Thien, Quang Tri provincial border area. As the lead platoon worked its way up-hill toward the suspected enemy, the point was engaged with rocket-propelled grenade fire. The platoon leader saw the point man, and an assistant machine gunner, wounded by the first RPG rounds. Before they could be moved to cover, he was hit in the back and the neck by at least three machine gun rounds. Both men lay in the contested area between the entrenched NVA and the advancing US troops. Immediate attempts by the remainder of the platoon to recover the two mean were forced back by heavy enemy attack. Over the next six hours the balance of D Company made additional efforts to force the enemy from the area but intense enemy fire continued and the US troops withdrew without recovering the two men. D Company lost four men in the fighting: CPL Michael Joseph Grimm, Carthage, NC, was one of them.

He served with Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, "Currahees", 101st Airborne Division, "Screaming Eagles", USARV.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
