Specialist Four Jimmy Ray Gross was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, SP4 Gross served our country until March 1st, 1969 in Quang Ngai, South Vietnam. He was 20 years old and was not married. It was reported that Jimmy died when his helicopter crashed. His body was recovered. SP4 Gross is on panel 30W, line 003 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less than a year.
He was the Son of Mr and Mrs Carl Edward Gross, Route #1, Box 350, Hickory, NC. Brother to Evelyn Pauline Gross Godshall, Mary Sue Gross Hilliard, Judy Jane Gross Buff, Wilma Lee Gross Walker, Rachel Ann Gross Powell & Calvin Edward Gross.
Jimmy attended Fred T.Foard High School, entered the service in May,1968 and was shipped out October,1968.He attended Mountain View Mennonite Church where he had been active in youth work. Prior to entering the Army he was employed by Highland House Inc. in Hickory
He served with Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 11th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, USARV.
He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal.
