Daughter of William S and Mary Jane (Hunter) Gaston.

Wife of James Marion Allen. Mother of Authur Eric, Lulu Elma, Burton Wesley, and Rollon S.

Sadly, Sarah is found in the 1910 U.S Federal Census at the age of 57 as being confined (inmate) at Mount Pleasant State Hospital for the Insane in Henry County, Iowa. She is classified as a laborer assigned to wash work.

A brother and two sisters
Thomas J Gaston (1856-1941)
Edith Lavonna Gaston Ruby (1858-1893)
Emma Florance Gaston Ruby (1871-1953)

A Puzzle

When Sarah is married at age 25 in the 1880 Census she is listed as Sarah Allen m. to James, and living with their young son Arthur, age 1.

Another Sarah Gaston is listed with her parents, supposedly a 9 year old sister to Sarah born approximately 1871 in the 1880 Census.

1871 is the same birth year of sister Emma Florance. My theory is that Emma was mistakenly listed as Sarah. How many times did your parent call you by your sibling's name? This makes more sense to me because why would you name two daughters Sarah? Plus Emma Gaston is nowhere to be found in 1880, but appears at age 28 in 1900 census as Emma Ruby residing with her husband William Ruby. A clue, Emma's marriage certificate, dated 4 March 1894 lists William Gaston and Mary J Hunter as her parents.
