Vivien Jeffreys Barker, dignified and graceful, died on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at her home in Trent Woods. She was 95 years old. Jeff Barker will be remembered for her steadfast consideration and gentle kindness toward others.

She was born in Hamlet, North Carolina, on May 31, 1920. She left home to attend Meredith College and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. She pursued her graduate studies in chemistry at North Carolina State University. During an age in which few women had careers in the sciences, she worked at DuPont as a chemist in Savannah, Georgia, and later in Richmond, Virginia. It was in Richmond that she met a dental student named Charles Thomas Barker. Jeff and Charlie married in 1945 and moved to New Bern in 1946, where they raised their three daughters.

All who knew Jeff will remember her sharp wit and natural curiosity. She had a keen intellectual interest underlying her reserved and polite personality. Her dominance of daily crossword puzzles and Jeopardy is well established in the family. Jeff was also a dedicated member of the New Bern Historical Society and served as its Secretary for years. She enjoyed travel and walks on the beach. She hit a hole in one at New Bern Golf & Country Club. More recently, she cherished her weekly bridge games with many dear friends. She participated in active Bible study groups for decades and was a charter member of Garber United Methodist Church.

Most of all, Mrs. Barker glowed with pride when discussing her family. She kept abreast of all familial news with frequent phone calls, and she shared affection with relatives and others in the form of personal notes, drafted in her impeccable handwriting. Though Charlie preceded her in death in 2002, she is survived by an adoring and growing group, including her sister Martha Jeffreys Carr and her three daughters and their spouses, Ruthie and Jim Henderson, Betty and Lou Cannon, and Nancy and Chip Hill. There are six grandchildren and spouses, each of whom “Bibby” cherished: Charles and Audrey Cushman, Will and Kathleen Cannon, Mimi and Jeff Nick, Tom Cannon, Andrew Hill, and Martha Hill. Four great-grandchildren have filled her home with laughter in recent years: Juliet and Charlie Cushman and Vivi and William Cannon.

The family wishes to express its appreciation to Mrs. Barker’s devoted caregivers: Della Collins, Lisa Gaston, Tiffany Holt, Esther Cooper, and Barbara Best. Memorial gifts may be made to Public Radio East, 800 College Court, New Bern, NC 28562. A memorial service and reception will be held Friday, April 22, at 2:00 p.m. at Garber United Methodist Church. The family will hold a private interment.
