Smith Mikels Died, Rites Set Tuesday

Smith Mikels, 87, of Greenwood R5, a former Fort Ritner resident, died at 11:15 p.m. Saturday at the Turtle Creek Nursing Home, Beech Grove, after an illness of three months.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday from the Hague Funeral Home, Medora, with Dr. Branine, pastor of an Indianapolis Baptist church, officiating. Burial in Dixon Chapel Cemetery. Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the Hague Funeral Home.

A retired farmer and carpenter, Mrs. Mikels was a member of the Jehovah Witnesses. Born August 10, 1886, in Lawrence County, he was the son of the late Andrew W. and Margaret Thurman Mikels. On August 5, 1918, in Fort Ritner, he married Ellen Horner who preceded him in death.

Surviving are three children, Ray Mikels, of Beech Grove, Mrs. Mary Gibbs, of Greenwood, and Mrs. Betty Umphress, of Arlington Heights, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Stella Henderson, of Bedford, and Miss Cleon Mikels, of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. One brother preceded him in death.
