John Marvin West, Jr., 76, of the Beaverdam community, passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Maggie Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation.

A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late John Marvin, Sr. and Edna Reno West. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Grace West Cooper, who died in 2015. J. M. retired in 2004 with 42 years of service from Estes Express Trucking Company and various other trucking companies as an evening supervisor and dispatcher. He was an avid UNC Tar Heels fan and especially enjoyed watching them play basketball. J. M. will be remembered for being a quiet yet hardworking person. He was a blessing to everyone he met always making others smile.

He is survived by special caregivers, Leslie Smith and Debra Todd.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2017 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Jonathan Blaylock officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
