Obituary for Abraham "Abe" Drieth
Abraham Drieth of Mead died on June 27, 2018 at the age of 83. Born on March 14, 1935 in Mead, Colorado, he was the 11th child born to Henry and Anna Burback Drieth.
In his early years, he lived on a farm east of Del Camino and went to Stone School until his father retired from farming and moved to Longmont. He graduated from Longmont High School in 1954.
After graduation, Abe joined the Army where he was initially stationed in Fort Carson, Colorado Springs and then Berlin, Germany. Abe was honorably discharged in 1957. He married Delores Ann Leonard on August 23, 1957 after meeting her cruising main street in Longmont.
He worked at the Colorado Brick and Tile company until 1959. His farming and ranching career began in 1959 in Brush, Colorado. In 1960, he moved back to Mead where he began farming in the area until he retired in 1997.
While farming, he was awarded Top 10 Sugar Beet Grower and named to Western Sugar President’s Quality Club for Superior Beet Quality. He also earned the Top Coors Barley Grower Award and was a consistent high producer of Coors barley. Abe served on the Board of Directors for the Longmont/Mead Co-op and Highland Ditch Company. He was an active member of the Veterans Foreign War in Johnston, Colorado.
He enjoyed collecting and restoring antique Oldsmobile cars and Massey Harris tractors. He converted a MCI transportation bus into a motor home which he used to travel extensively with Delores throughout the US and Mexico.
Preceding him in death are his daughter Terri Lynn Holtwick, his parents, eight brothers: Rynne, Danny, Rueben, Joe, Henry, Walt, Issac and two sisters Rosa and Rose. Surviving him are his wife, son, Duane “Shorty” (Deb) of Longmont; daughter Tami (Alan) Oswald of Longmont; and Cindie (Randy) Reddington of Broomfield, son- in-law Karl Holtwick of Pahrump, Nevada, one sister, Ann Houder of Longmont, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Services will be held at 9:00 am, July 2, 2018 in the Howe Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow at the Longmont Mountain View Cemetery.
