He was a highly decorated General of the engineers in the Wehrmacht during World War II who commanded several corps. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery and successful military leadership. He retired from active duty in January 1944. He was taken prisoner by the Soviet Union and held until 1955.
