Emma Whitaker Thomson, 98, Of Topsail Beach, beloved wife of John Curtis Thomson, Jr. passed peacefully from this life on May 28, 2018 at Fales Hospice Pavilion in Wilmington.

Born on February 24, 1920 in Enfield, NC to Hubert M. and Nina V. Whitaker, Emma graduated in Business from High Point College and married Curtis Thomson in December 1945, beginning a 73 year marriage. She and Curt spent his professional career in Raleigh, NC, raising their family. She served the Highland United Methodist Church as a secretary and sang in the church choir. In addition to music, she enjoyed many interests, loved animals and was a wonderful cook.

On their retirement to Topsail Beach, she helped with the founding of the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center and worked as an EMT with the Topsail Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad. She attended Emma Anderson Memorial Chapel, where she sang in the choir.

Her warmth, good humor and grace will be remembered by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband Curtis Thomson, and two children, William W. Thomson of Iowa City, Iowa, and Emma Christine Thomson of Topsail Beach and Wilmington, as well as by one grandson, Thomas Logan Willoughby, and his wife Liz Cook Willoughby of Kansas City, Missouri.

Four siblings, her twin sister Lilly W. Norman, brothers Hubert M. and Wilson C. Whitaker, and sister Nina W. Beavans pre-deceased her, as well as one son, John Curtis Thomson III 1946-1952).

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (www.seaturtlehospital.org/donate/) or the Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
