He was born Dec. 14, 1934 in Richmond County, son of James E. Butler Sr. and Ruby Taylor Butler.

Mr. Butler was a former jailer for the Richmond County Sheriff's Department, a veteran of U.S. Army and a faithful member and deacon of Jefferson Park Free Will Baptist Church. Many remember him as the "Sock Man."
