Pakistani Statesman. He served as the acting Prime Minister of Pakistan from July 18, 1993 to October 19, 1993. He attended the Government College University in Lahore where he gained a B.A. in Honors in Economics and attained a M.A. in economics from the Punjab University. He received the Fulbright scholarship and went to the United States to attend the Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana where he gained a PhD in Economics in 1955. In 1955, he returned to Pakistan and joined the country's civil service, initially posted at the Planning Commission. In 1956, he resigned from the Planning Commission and went to the United States to join the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He enjoyed a distinguished career in IMF and eventually served as economic adviser to Ghana in 1960. He later went on to work at the International Finance Corporation and served as its executive vice president from 1974 to 1977. In 1981 he went to work at the World Bank and served in various capacities until 1992 when he left to form a private hedge fund, the Emerging Market Associates. In 1993, after a constitutional crisis in his home country, he was asked to serve as acting prime minister. He served in this position for three months before a general election, which brought Pakistan Peoples Party leader Benazir Bhutto back to power, was held. He passed away from a lung infection.
