Leo Burton "Bert" Johnson, an 80-year old resident of Adams Road, Beaver, passed away unexpectedly on June 28, 2003, at Mount Carmel Hospital in Columbus. A respected and intelligent gentleman, a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, he had seen and done many things in his great life.

Leo was born December 23, 1922, on Pine Creek, South Webster, Ohio, to Garfield and Tilitha Cumi (Tackett) Johnson, the seventh son and 13th child born to them. He was born shortly after his parents moved to Scioto County, Ohio from Wheelwright, Kentucky, making him their only surviving child born in Ohio. Growing up in a farming community, he continued the family tradition of farming, raising tobacco, corn and hay on his farms, first on his farm in Pine Creek and later at Beaver.

Four sisters and five brothers preceded him in death: Elmina Carrie (Vernon) Dyer, Hattie Jane (Harry) Clack, Sarah Elsie Slack Ison Freeman, Elvira Edna (Henry) Gray. Samuel Jefferson Johnson, Thomas Franklin (Trudl) Johnson, Albert Curtis Johnson, Thomas Franklin Johnson, Joseph Estel (Dorothy) Johnson, and Basil Bernard Johnson. He is survived by sister Esther Lenore (Woodrow) Hinchman of Davin, W. Va., and brothers William Ireland (Ocel) Johnson of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Neville Gordon (Lillie) Johnson of Trotwood, Ohio.

Bert graduated from South Webster High School in 1940, and worked for a time at the Baltimore shipyards in Maryland. He entered into service to his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, taking part in campaigns in South Philippines (Liberation), New Guinea, and Luzon. He married Avileen Ruth Bouts, daughter of William Frederick and Della Mae (Cook) Bouts on May 12, 1947, in Greenup, Kentucky, who survives.

He attended Ohio State University, studying engineering, and was employed at both Frigidaire and General Motors in Dayton. He retired in 1985 from the Goodyear Atomic Plant of Piketon after 32 years of employment. Leo also traveled extensively throughout the United States, enjoying many parts of the West in particular.

Leo and his wife raised three children: one son, Robert Eugene Johnson of Peebles, Janet Marie (Danny) Hicks of Waverly, and Karen Sue (Russell) Nickell of Beaver. Also important to Leo were his seven grandchildren. Sabrena and William Johnson of Peebles, Denver, Daniel and Della Hicks of Waverly, Jessica (Rodney) Waddell of Lucasville, and Jerrad Nickell of Beaver. He had one great-grandson, Denver Hicks II.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the D.W. Davis Funeral Home in South Webster, with interment in South Webster Cemetery, with military graveside rites by James Dickey Post American Legion.
