Roy H. Matheny, 80, of Parkersburg passed away Dec. 26, 2006.
He was born in Mineral Wells Dec. 30, 1925, a son of the late James and Anna Mae Steinhoff Matheny. Roy was a 1942 graduate of Parkersburg High School. He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. Roy was at Normandy on the D-Day invasion and was on the LST-497. He was a member of the U.S. Navy L.S.T. Association. He was a member of the American Legion Post 15, Parkersburg, VFW 1212 Parkersburg, Mt. Olivet Lodge 3 A.F.&A.M., Scottish Rite Valley of Parkersburg, and the Nemesis Shrine Temple of Parkersburg. He worked construction as a lead burner for 10 years. He retired in 1987 after 27 years of service at Borg-Warner, where he was a maintenance foreman.
Roy, along with his wife, attended Grace Gospel Church in Pettyville for several years. He loved to fish and spend time with his family. He worked on hobbies helping everybody, attended Navy reunions and loved to travel.
He is survived by his loving wife, Martha Jane Bender Matheny, whom he married March 4, 1946; three sons, Steve and wife, Connie, of Parkersburg, Paul and wife, Jan, of Walker and Joe and friend, Diane, of Walker; three brothers, Robert Matheny of Mineral Wells, Delbert Matheny and wife, Ruby, of Mineral Wells and Bill Matheny and Shelby of Parkersburg; three grandchildren, Stacy Bennett and husband, Jeremy, Lori Longwell and husband, James, and Scott Matheny and friend, Kelly; and seven great-grandchildren, Kara, Kaci and Kali Longwell, Colby and Austin Bennett and Ashley and Cory Matheny.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harry Matheny; and a sister, Beulah Caltrider.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Pike Street, south Parkersburg, with Pastors Mike Allen and Bill Angel officiating. Burial will follow in Parkersburg Memorial Gardens, with full military honors by American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Tuesday at the funeral home.

PARKERSBURG — Investigators are seeking the public's assistance in getting more information about the possible movements of a murdered south Parkersburg man who went missing on the day after Christmas, and whose body was discovered two days later.
Roy Matheny, 80, of Hawthorne Street in south Parkersburg, went missing last Tuesday morning. His abandoned vehicle was found Wednesday in the Park Shopping Center and his body was discovered in a vacant lot at the end of Staunton Avenue Thursday.
On Sunday, Sgt. Greg Nangle, with the Parkersburg Police Department's Detective Bureau, released the cause of death in the case, stating Matheny was stabbed multiple times.
‘‘This is a very violent murder and there's somebody out there that has information on this and that's what we're seeking at this point,'' Nangle said. ‘‘This gentleman would have been 81 years old yesterday (Saturday), he's a stand-up citizen of Parkersburg and worked in this area all of his life. He has a significant family here and was loved by everyone we've spoke to,'' he said.
Investigators are seeking help from the public about Matheny's movements on the morning of his disappearance, Nangle said. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police department at (304) 424-8444. All information will be held in confidentiality, he said.
‘‘We are seeking information on Mr. Matheny himself, on the day he was reported missing which was Tuesday, Dec. 26, the day after Christmas,'' he said. ‘‘We're seeking the public's help if they know Mr. Matheny, if they spoke to him on Tuesday morning, by chance, whether it be by telephone or in person.''
Nangle said investigators are specifically interested in the early morning hours, up to 10 a.m. when he is presumed to have gone missing, and the period from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on that day.
‘‘Mr. Matheny lives on the south side of Parkersburg and he may have went to the post office or he may have went to get a cup of coffee or a newspaper at any of the local convenience stores,'' he said.
Investigators are also seeking information on the movements of Matheny's vehicle, a pewter or silver-grey GMC Sonoma extended cab pickup truck with a hard bedcover. It was found the following day at the Park Shopping Center after someone contacted the police department regarding its presence in the parking lot Wednesday evening, he said.
‘‘We're curious if anyone saw anybody park that vehicle there, anyone walk away from that vehicle sometime on Wednesday,'' Nangle said, adding that any possible information about the vehicle's movements on Tuesday and Wednesday would be helpful.
The body was discovered around 10:30 a.m. Thursday in a vacant lot off Staunton Avenue after being spotted by a passer-by. Nangle said anyone who may have observed anything in the area of Staunton Avenue, where the body was discovered, is also asked to contact police.
Nangle said a specific motive has not been determined in the case, but robbery is considered to be at the top of the list at this time.
