Edward was born in Chowan County, NC. to Rufus William Stokley and his wife Catherine Maude Jackson. After his mother died on August 2, 1928, he spent most of his younger years living with his grandmother Kate Jackson in Norfolk, Virginia and Elizabeth City, NC and his Aunt Sue Perry who lived on Pennsylvania Avenue(now North Poindexter Street) in Elizabeth City. He graduated from Edenton High School and moved to Elizabeth City, NC where he worked at Walgreen's Pharmacy operated by C. P. Mitchell. This drug store was on Main Street. This was where he met (living) his future wife. He later worked at Jacock's Pharmacy on S. Poindexter Street. He and (living) moved to Washington, NC prior to 1943 where he managed Clark's Drug Store. (living) and Edward lived in Washington, NC until he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps 20 April 1943. He was commissioned a 2d Lieutenant on 22 July 1944. He completed bombardier school at Carlsbad, New Mexico that same year. He died at Casper Army Air Field, Casper, Wyoming on 17 October 1944 as a result of injuries sustained in a plane crash while training as a bombardier on a B-24J bomber. He received posthumously in May, 2001 the Purple Heart Medal and the World War II Victory medal. He also received at this time the World War II Honorable Service lapel pin. His remains were returned from Wyoming and he was buried on 24 October 1944 in New Hollywood Cemetery, Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County, NC.
