US NavyMarion McDaniel "Turk" Turner, 92, of the 600 block of Timberland Trail, Virginia Beach, Virginia, went on Eternal Patrol February 28, 2011, at the VA Medical Palliative Care, Hampton, Virginia following a lengthy illness.

He was born April 22, 1918 in Moultrie, GA to the late Isaac McDaniel Turner and Jessie Nelson Turner. He graduated from Moultrie High School where he excelled in sports, especially starring in football. In later years he graduated from Tidewater Community College with a degree in business management.

On July 6, 1939 he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, and when Germany invaded Poland, he enlisted in the US Navy on October 12, 1939, and in 1940 became a Submariner and served on the US Sealion, USS Canopus, and the USS Perch SS176. On March 3, 1942 the Perch was critically disabled by Japanese depth charges, and the crew was picked up out of the Java Sea, taken to the island of Makassar Celebes where he was interned as a POW for the next three and one half years, during which time he suffered cruel beatings, starvation diet, and many tropical diseases. He was repatriated on October 17, 1945, and remained in service until he retired on December 1, 1959, attaining the position of Chief Electrician's Mate.

The following 20 years were spent as an electrical inspector on nuclear submarines at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation. Upon retirement he enjoyed working for Fun Tours as a tour guide.

"Turk," as he was known, earned many medals and awards including the Bronze Star, American Defense, American Area Corps, Asiatic-Pacific Medal, Philippines Defense Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Point System, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Medal, and most recently the Purple Heart Medal and Korean Service Medal awarded Jan. 2, 2011.

He was an active member of King's Grant Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class, US Submariners WWII Tidewater Chapter, having served as Vice-President, President and State Commander, VFW Post 392, Holland Club Member FRA Branch 5 and American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor.

He was married to the late Marion Harbuck Turner for forty-eight years until her death in November 1992. Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Nell Skinner Martin Turner; children, Mildred Susan Price and husband Harry Price, Jr., Toni Jan Clark and husband Roy Clark, Michael Marion "Mikey" Turner, all of Norfolk, Virginia. Grandchildren are John Marion Simmons, Michael Lee Simmons, and wife Cheri Simmons, Tara Lynn Traeger and Rebecca Anne Price. Great-grandchildren are Austin Moore, Victoria Anne Traeger, Hunter Caleb Simmons, Faith Nicole Simmons and Joshua Gideon Simmons.

He is survived by a sister, Eugenia Turner Kennedy of Yulee, FL; as well as nephews, Roy Daughtry, Ike Daughtry, and Robert Daughtry, Dennis Kennedy, Elliott Kennedy, Patrick Kennedy; and several great nephews and nieces. Step children are Charles M. Martin, Jr. and wife Sharon L. Martin, Jeanette M. Brosius, and husband David C. Brosius. Step grandchildren are Dorothea D. Karsten, Charles B. Martin, and wife Kassandra Martin, Charnelle B. Summerhill and husband Benjamin Summerhill, Jamie B. Pope and husband Edward Pope; step great-grandchildren Joshua A. Karsten, Allison Nicolle Karsten, Jarrett Summerhill, Rio Summerhill, Bailey Fifield; and three great great grandchildren.

Services for Turk will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2011, at the Kings Grant Baptist Church, 873 Little Neck Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Burial at sea will take place at a later date. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

We laid an American hero to rest today. Today, we returned Marion "Turk" Turner to the sea. Turk was born Marion Turner on April 22, 1918 in Moultrie, GA and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1939. He became an Electrician's Mate and immediately volunteered for the submarine service. During his long career, he served aboard USS Sealion and USS Perch SS 176.

Marion "Turk" Turner's ashes were returned to the sea. The Purple Heart Recipient received his well deserved Naval Burial at Sea.
