Civil War soldier. Joined the 25th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry in July 1861. Transferred to the 62nd Regiment, Co. B, in 1863, serving with four of his brothers. All five were captured by the North at Cumberland Gap in 1863 and sent to Camp Douglas, Chicago, IL. Two of his brothers, Charles and Sidney died there. Josiah and his other brothers, Robert and John, survived and were released at the end of the war.
Married Hannah E. Gladdis and with her had six children, all born after the war: Samantha, Monroe, Robert, Jasper, Rachel and William.
According to a 1940 headstone application by W. H. Davenport, Josiah died in 1900 and was buried in the Bethel Cemetery in Hayesville, North Carolina.
