CUMBERLAND CENTER - Dr. Stephen Alberg died peacefully, after a long illness, Sept. 24, 2016.
He was born in New York City on July 20, 1941. He grew up first in the Bronx and later in Englewood Cliffs, N.J. He started college at Columbia University at the age of 16, later transferring to, and graduating from, Oberlin College. He attended medical school at Cornell, and did his residency in adult and child psychiatry at Mt. Sinai in New York City.
After two years in the Navy as the base psychiatrist at the Bainbridge Naval Training Center, Dr. Alberg had a psychiatric practice in Cherry Hill, N.J. He also taught at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, and at Hahnemann Medical College.
Fulfilling a longtime dream, Dr. Alberg left New Jersey in 1986, and moved to an 18th century home in Bowdoinham. In his retirement, he was very active at Temple Beth El in Portland.
He is survived by his children, Larry (Danielle), and Robin (Rob); and six grandchildren, Cameron, Jillian, Aaron, Jessica, Aubrey, and Eliana.
A graveside service was held Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Temple Beth El Memorial Park.
