Dr. Maples earned an MD from Howard University. He returned to Tennessee to practice until his service as a U.S. Army physician upon the outbreak of the Spanish-American War. He and his wife, Sadie moved to Hawaii after he was hired as a staff physician by the Hawaii Commercial and Sugar Company. The company also hired his brother Samuel as a corporate lawyer. Instead of returning to the U.S. mainland, the Maples had two daughters born in Hawaii and decided to remain there for the rest of their lives. He worked for HC&S Co for three decades, while also doing hospital duty, owning a pharmacy for a few years, managing a small orchestra due to his musical talent.

Mrs. Sadie Fulford Maples and Dr. Maples were the parents of Bessie Elizabeth, born August 14th, 1905 and Edward, born August 16th, 1908. Another daughter, Gladys, was born in 1909. Gladys was married to Lino Navarro, from whom she was later divorced.
